# Suggest follow-up questions for an answer

> Get up to three short questions to ask next, generated from one answer and the passages it cited. An empty list is a normal result, not an error.

Returns up to three short questions a person might ask next, generated from one answer and only the passages that answer cited. Nothing is retrieved again and nothing else in the conversation is used. The request takes no body.

An empty `follow_ups` is a normal result and still a `200`. You get one when the answer abstained, cited nothing, failed or has no text, and also when generation itself fails: suggestions are an enhancement, so a model provider that is down never turns this into an error. Each suggestion is plain text of at most 150 characters, with no links or markup.

Generating suggestions calls the assistant's model, so it is recorded in your [usage](/api-reference/analytics/get-usage). Nothing is stored: calling it again generates again, and may return different questions.

You can ask for suggestions only in a conversation you started. A conversation that does not exist, belongs to another organization or was started by someone else returns `404`, and so does a message that is not in it or a malformed ID. A credential that cannot send messages gets `403`.

<ParamField path="conversation_id" type="string" required>
  The conversation ID.
</ParamField>

<ParamField path="message_id" type="string" required>
  The answer's `id`, from [Send a message](/api-reference/conversations/send-message) or [List
  messages](/api-reference/conversations/list-messages).
</ParamField>
